Irises by Sientje Mesdag-van Houten puts two flowers side by side, though they couldn't look more different. At the top, one iris is still fresh, its pale lavender-white petals loo se and a little see-through where the light catches them, holding onto that first-day openness. Below it, a second bloom has gone deep purple-brown and curled in on itself, well past its best days. Thin green stems carry both flowers up the page, and it's hard not to let your eye move between the two, one arriving as the other says goodbye. Sientje Mesdag-van Houten was a Dutch painter born in Groningen in 1834, married to the marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag, and she came to painting full-time later in life, after the death of her young son. She had a real eye for the ordinary, landscapes and cut flowers rather than grand subjects, and she spent much of her career championing other women artists alongside her own work.
