ISKANDR—Nijmegen's troubadour of psychedelic doom folk—returns with Sacraal, displaying renewed songwriting and a creative path that takes the project in an ever more spacious and enigmatic direction. Across seven songs of medieval triumph and vigour, punctuated by moments of intense stillness, the album sees ISKANDR move even further away from its roots in the black metal scene and towards post-industrial landscapes, introspection and hymnal folk motifs. Sacraal blends apocalyptic folk song structures, gothic funeral hymns and eerie industrial soundscapes, with organ-driven introductions and moments of profound spaciousness that evoke the feeling of gazing at the stars in the night sky, imbued with deep nostalgia. With Sacraal, ISKANDR takes another step towards broader, genre-defying experimentation, marking yet another evolution in the project's distinctive artistic journey.
