IWAKO erasers are made in Japan using non-toxic ingredients. In addition, the materials used have passed the toy safety standards (Part 3, Sections 1 and 2) set by the Polymer Materials Center. The erasability (erasing rate) test (based on JIS 6050 4.4) involves cutting an eraser to a certain size, setting it in a machine, and moving it back and forth three times over a piece of paper rubbed with a pencil. The paper is then exposed to infrared light, and the amount of graphite removed from the paper is measured. The standard is 80% or more, but Iwako's erasers achieved 87.7%.
