J.R. Brillet VS 750ML is a Petite Champagne cognac bottled at 40% ABV in a distinctive hand-blown bottle. What separates this VS from the crowded entry-level cognac field is its single-origin sourcing from one of cognac's most prized crus, backed by a family heritage stretching to 1656. Quick Facts: ABV: 40% | Origin: Petite Champagne, Charente, France | VS (minimum 3 years aged) | Distillery: Maison J.R. Brillet Production & Heritage The Brillet family's history in cognac production dates to 1656, when Guy Brillet installed his first alembic on the estate in Grande Champagne. Today, the house operates from Graves Saint Amant in the Charente department, drawing its VS exclusively from the Petite Champagne cru — the second most highly regarded growing zone in the cognac appellation. The spirit undergoes traditional double distillation, then rests for a minimum of three years in oak barrels sourced from the Limoges forest, beginning in new wood before transferring to older, seasoned casks. This two-stage maturation coaxes out fruit character while tempering the tannic edge that new oak alone can impart. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with a powerful, expressive bouquet. Ripe orchard fruit leads, followed by subtle floral undertones and a hint of fresh oak. Taste: On entry, the palate is immediately approachable with a rounded, fruity core. Mid-palate brings gentle warmth and a lightly honeyed sweetness that reflects the Petite Champagne terroir. The texture is supple and clean, avoiding the roughness sometimes found in young cognacs. Finish: The finish is moderate in length, with lingering fruit and a delicate warmth. A touch of toasted oak and dried flowers trails off cleanly. How to Drink Brillet VS Brillet VS drinks well on the rocks or with a single cube to open up its fruit-forward bouquet — no need for excessive dilution. Its clean, rounded profile also makes it a reliable cocktail cognac. A Sidecar benefits from the fruit-driven character, which balances the citrus and triple sec. A French 75 variation (substituting cognac for gin) highlights the floral aromatics against champagne's effervescence. A classic Sazerac built with Brillet VS gains approachability from its softer oak influence, keeping the drink lively rather than heavy. Brillet VS delivers a rounded, fruity palate with gentle warmth, light honey sweetness, and a clean finish shaped by Limoges oak aging. It is an easy-drinking cognac with a notably expressive, fruit-forward nose. How does Brillet VS compare to Hennessy VS? Hennessy VS is a blend of eaux-de-vie from multiple cognac crus, producing a broader, spicier profile, while Brillet VS is sourced exclusively from Petite Champagne, giving it a more focused, fruit-driven character and terroir specificity. Brillet is also a smaller, family-owned house compared to Hennessy's global-scale operation under LVMH. Is Brillet VS good for cocktails? Yes — its clean fruit profile and moderate oak influence make it versatile in cognac-based cocktails like the Sidecar, French 75, and Sazerac without overpowering other ingredients. Where is Brillet VS made? Brillet VS is produced by Maison J.R. Brillet at their estate in Graves Saint Amant in the Charente department of France, within the Petite Champagne cru of the cognac appellation. What foods pair well with Brillet VS? Soft aged cheeses like Brie or Comté complement its fruit notes. Roasted duck or pork with a fruit glaze mirrors the cognac's orchard-fruit character. Dark chocolate with a moderate cacao percentage (around 60–70%) brings out the subtle sweetness. Stone fruit desserts such as tarte Tatin or poached pears echo its fruity core. What sizes does Brillet VS come in? The standard available size is 750ml, presented in J.R. Brillet's signature hand-blown glass bottle. Is Brillet VS worth the price? Brillet VS positions as a mid-range VS cognac, but its single-origin Petite Champagne sourcing and artisan hand-blown bottle offer more provenance and character than many similarly priced blended alternatives in the category. Why Brillet VS? In a VS cognac market dominated by large houses blending across multiple crus, Brillet VS stands apart as a single-origin Petite Champagne expression from a family estate with roots in the 17th century. The two-stage barrel aging program — new Limoges oak transitioning to older casks — gives it a polish uncommon at the VS level. The hand-blown bottle signals the house's commitment to craft at every step, from distillation to presentation. For drinkers seeking a VS with genuine terroir identity rather than a mass-market blend, Brillet delivers substance behind the label.
