~ 20 seeds Citrullus lanatus Origin: Jenin, Palestine Grown by: the Lovelace Family Farm in Kentucky Known for its resilience, long storage ability, and of course its deliciousness, Jadu’i watermelon fields are resonant with meaning for Palestinians: women gave birth out in the melon fields; many sought refuge in the fields during the war; and many more remember the times when the watermelons were stored under beds to eat during the winter. This watermelon has stayed etched in Palestinian memories to this day. There is almost no one from Jenin who does not have a story from their parents or grandparents, or their own experience, of this beloved fruit. Associated with Ba'al agriculture (unirrigated, rain-fed farming), these watermelons were long known for their pest resistance and resilience in dry climates, and beloved for their sweet, rich flavor, and round and heavy size. In the days when borders were open, Jadu’i was exported from Palestine across the region, to Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and no doubt even further afield. Due to some genetic bottlenecking — this variety very nearly went extinct — fruits on these Jadu’i plants are smaller than they should be. We are doing our best to select seeds only from the largest fruits, and we urge you to do the same. If you find any that are particularly large, please get in touch with us, take photos, and send us some seeds back! Growing Instructions: Direct sow 1-2 weeks after the last frost, or seed indoors 3-4 weeks beforehand and transplant. Space 12-18" apart in rows that are 6-8' apart. Watermelons love heat and well drained soils, farmers have success planting in mounds and mulching with straw. Save for seed when slightly after best for eating.
