Ripper teeth in action (2010) Limited edition of 10, numbered and signed recto by the artist Dimensions: (unframed) British artist James Capper (b. 1987, London) is interested in the aesthetics and processes of construction engineering, and adopts their techniques, materials and processes to develop the possibilities of sculpture. Beginning with drawings, Capper develops his work in a range of scales from the handheld to the industrial, working sequentially in a series of prototypes termed ‘divisions’. The capacities and applications of his sculptures in action are understood and developed through testing, filming and subsequent demonstrations. In 2011, Capper created Ripper Teeth in Action as part of Modern Art Oxford’s Art in Rose Hill commission programme, employing a set of ‘ripper teeth’ of his own design to work on sections of land around Rose Hill, Oxford. In a series of live performances, the artists attached custom-built fittings to an excavator vehicle in order to explore their capacity for mark-making, drawing on traditions of land art and inspired by the prototype earthmoving machines developed by Robert Gimour LeTourneau in the 1960s. The commission was supported by an exhibition of drawings and concepts for sculptures by James Capper in Modern Art Oxford’s Creative Space. This limited edition was generously created by Capper to accompany the project.
