Jasiri means “brave” in Swahili, a language spoken by my grandmother. I met her through my mother’s stories and recollections of languages she spoke with her mother as a child. A l anguage I never knew myself but still my bones call to the rich dialect that empowers my heritage. This is a small tribute to my grandmother, and all women who think it important to instill small tokens of cultural wisdom to their children, a powerful and brave woman. Show more
