Java Fern Trident (Microsorum pteropus ‘Trident’) is a unique freshwater aquarium plant known for its narrow, multi-branched leaves and delicate textured appearance. Compared to standard Java Fern, the Trident variety has finely divided fronds that create a bushier, more decorative look in planted aquariums and aquascapes. This hardy rhizome plant is an excellent choice for beginners and experienced aquascapers because it does not need to be planted in substrate. Instead, Java Fern Trident should be attached to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium décor, where it will slowly anchor itself over time. Live Plant Notice: Live aquatic plants may be available for shipping when eligible. Freshwater fish and other livestock are available for in-store purchase or local pickup only at Tropical Treasures Wyo in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Attach it to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium décor using aquarium-safe glue, cotton thread, or fishing line. Over time, the rhizome will naturally attach to the surface. Important Planting Tip Do not bury the rhizome in substrate. Burying the rhizome can cause the plant to rot. If placing near the substrate, keep the rhizome exposed and only allow the roots to anchor. Lighting & Growth Java Fern Trident does best under low to moderate lighting. Too much light may encourage algae growth on the slower-growing leaves. CO₂ is not required, making this plant a great choice for low-tech aquariums, but CO₂ and liquid fertilizers may help support fuller growth. Propagation Java Fern Trident can be propagated by dividing the rhizome or by allowing small adventitious plantlets to form on mature leaves. Once plantlets develop roots, they can be gently separated and attached to new hardscape. Great For Low-tech planted aquariums Aquascapes Shrimp tanks Betta aquariums Community fish tanks Driftwood and rock layouts Beginner planted tanks Frequently Asked Questions Is Java Fern Trident beginner friendly? Yes. Java Fern Trident is hardy, low-maintenance, and does not require CO₂, making it a great plant for beginners. Can Java Fern Trident be planted in gravel? The roots can anchor near gravel, but the rhizome should not be buried. It is best attached to driftwood, rock, or aquarium décor. Does Java Fern Trident need CO₂? No. CO₂ is not required, although growth may improve with CO₂ supplementation and regular fertilization. Why are my Java Fern leaves getting algae? Java Fern grows slowly, so too much light or excess nutrients may cause algae to grow on the leaves. Lower lighting, balanced fertilization, and good water flow can help. Where should I place Java Fern Trident in my aquarium? Java Fern Trident works well as a midground plant or attached to driftwood, rocks, and aquascaping décor.
