James David "JD" Vance (born August 2, 1984) is an American politician, author, attorney, and Marine Corps veteran who has served as the 50th vice president of the United States since January 20, 2025, under President Donald Trump. Born in Middletown, Ohio, Vance overcame a challenging upbringing marked by poverty and family instability, experiences he chronicled in his bestselling 2016 memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," which was later adapted into a 2020 film.
