Written by Elvina M. Hall in 1865, the hymn was born during a sermon at Monument Street Methodist Church in Baltimore. Distracted by the preaching, Hall scribbled the lyrics onto t he flyleaf of her choir hymnal. At Coincidentally, the church’s organist, John Grape, had recently composed a tune called "All to Christ I Owe" that fit her words perfectly.
