The 2018 vintage is composed of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec, and 2% Cabernet Franc, all sourced from 100% estate-grown fruit — a standard upheld since the 2004 vintage. Grapes are drawn from six estate vineyard sites across multiple Napa Valley sub-appellations, including Stags Leap District (40%), Yountville/Oak Knoll District (18%), Suscol in South Napa (18%), Banca Dorada in Rutherford (13%), Home Ranch in St. Helena (14%), and Barboza in Stags Leap District (7%). The wine was aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels.Tasting NotesAroma: The nose opens with powerful blackcurrant cordial and stewed dark plum before moving into perfumed florals — violets, in particular — layered with cigar box, graphite, and clove oil. Beneath those primary notes, cooler undertones of menthol, wet slate, and cedar chest emerge with time in the glass.Taste: The entry is plush and generous, delivering concentrated blackberry and boysenberry fruit with immediate depth. At mid-palate, mocha, dark chocolate, and anise build complexity while a backbone of fine-grained, dusty tannins provides structure without weight. The wine demonstrates remarkable balance at this stage, with bold freshness supporting tightly wound, crunchy black fruits.Finish: Extremely long and savory, with lingering spice, sweet tobacco, and subtle menthol carrying the palate well beyond the last sip. The tannin resolution is seamless, leaving a refined, mineral-tinged impression that invites another taste. How to Drink Insignia 2018This wine is best served at 60–65°F in a large-bowled Bordeaux glass.
