Quick Facts: ABV: ~12.5% (varies by vintage) | Origin: California, USA | Varietal: Pinot Grigio | Producer: Josh Cellars (Joseph Carr Wines, est. 2007) Production & Heritage Josh Cellars was founded in 2007 by American vintner Joseph Carr, who named the brand as a tribute to his father Josh — a lumberjack by trade who also served in the U.S. Army and volunteered as a local firefighter. The winery sources Pinot Grigio grapes from select vineyard sites across California, prioritizing lots that deliver aromatic intensity and balanced acidity. In 2021, Wine Enthusiast recognized Josh Cellars as American Winery of the Year, underscoring the brand's consistency across its entire portfolio. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with citrus blossom and lemongrass before moving into riper tropical tones of green guava and papaya. Subtle hints of honeydew melon and jasmine add floral complexity as the wine breathes. Taste: On the palate, bright tangerine and green apple arrive first, followed by a mid-palate of ripe pear and apricot. A thread of wet-stone minerality keeps the fruit grounded, preventing the wine from tipping into sweetness. Finish: The finish is dry and juicy, with lingering citrus pith and a clean, refreshing close. It fades at moderate length, leaving a faint impression of stone fruit and mineral. How to Drink Josh Pinot Grigio Serve well-chilled, between 45–50°F, in a standard white wine glass to concentrate the aromatics. This is an immediately approachable wine that needs no decanting or extended breathing time. It works in a Classic Spritz — topped with a splash of sparkling water and an orange wheel for a low-ABV afternoon drink. Try it in a Hugo Cocktail, where the wine's floral and tropical notes complement elderflower liqueur and fresh mint. It also makes a solid base for a White Wine Sangria, pairing naturally with sliced peaches, citrus, and a touch of brandy. It is a crisp, fruit-forward white wine dominated by citrus, green apple, pear, and tropical notes of guava and apricot, finishing dry with a streak of minerality. How does Josh Pinot Grigio compare to Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio? Santa Margherita is sourced from the Alto Adige and Valdadige regions of northeastern Italy and tends toward a leaner, more mineral-driven style, while Josh Cellars draws from California vineyards and delivers slightly riper tropical fruit and a rounder body. Both are widely available, but Josh typically sits at a lower price point. Is Josh Pinot Grigio good for beginners? Yes — its approachable fruit character, moderate alcohol, and clean finish make it an excellent entry point for anyone exploring white wine or the Pinot Grigio grape. Where is Josh Pinot Grigio made? Josh Cellars Pinot Grigio is produced in California, sourcing grapes from select vineyard sites throughout the state. The brand was established by vintner Joseph Carr in 2007. What foods pair well with Josh Pinot Grigio? Grilled shrimp or light seafood, where the wine's citrus notes mirror a squeeze of lemon. Fresh caprese salad, as the acidity cuts through mozzarella richness. Thai green papaya salad, matching the wine's tropical aromatics. Chicken piccata, where bright caper and lemon sauce echo the wine's tangy profile. Light goat cheese or herbed chèvre, balanced by the wine's clean minerality. What sizes does Josh Pinot Grigio come in? The standard bottling is 750ml, which is the most widely available format. Is Josh Pinot Grigio worth the price? Josh Cellars Pinot Grigio sits firmly in the value tier of California white wines, yet its 92-point Wine Enthusiast rating for the 2023 vintage suggests it consistently over-delivers relative to its price category. Why Josh Pinot Grigio? The 92-point score from Wine Enthusiast on the 2023 vintage is the headline, but the broader story is the brand's track record — Josh Cellars earned American Winery of the Year from the same publication in 2021. That kind of institutional recognition signals reliable quality across vintages, not a one-off success. For a California Pinot Grigio at this price tier, the combination of aromatic complexity, dry finish, and critical endorsement makes it a rare find. It fills the gap between mass-market whites that lack personality and boutique bottles that strain a weeknight budget.
