Jubilee was inspired by Alvin Ailey's Cry, as danced by Judith Jamison — a work that moves through sorrow, endurance, and finally, release. I wanted to sit in that final moment. The freedom. The breath. The joy that comes when you are no longer metaphorically "shackled" by carrying what once weighed you down. The layered textures and embedded newsprint hold memory and history, while the figure expands outward — no longer shackled, no longer confined, no longer bracing. Just freely donning a new consciousness of Black potential. And now, a clock quietly marks the edge of the canvas — a reminder that this moment has been years in the making. That jubilee is not just a feeling. It is a reckoning with time itself. Jubilee, in this sense, is not accidental. It is earned. And sometimes, choosing joy is the most powerful act of freedom we have.
