Cut thread length to 18" and keep a shorter (2" tail) as you stitch. Needles have punched eyes that can be rough and damage your thread as you stitch. The shorter tail minimizes the needle traveling up and down your thread to help you avoid fraying the thread. Can be used on 18 mesh with proper stitch tension. Use shorter thread lengths so the thread doesn't become fuzzy. Some stitchers feel the thread is too bulky basketweave on 18 mesh canvas. If you are using longer decorative stitches, it will work well.
