Botanical Name: Juniperus communis Botany and Origins: The shrub grows wild throughout central Europe. It is a small tree reaching the height of 12m with blue green needle like leaves, greenish yellow flowers and small round berries. The berries take about three years to mature. The best juniper berries are collected in northern Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia and France. Method of Extraction: Juniperberry oil is steam distilled from the crushed, dried or partly dried ripe berries. Cultivation: Conventional Historical and Traditional Uses: Juniper was commonly burnt as a fumigant and ritual incense by ancient Greeks to combat epidemics, and by Tibetans and native Americans for ceremonial purposes. The English name juniper is derived from the Latin juniores, meaning young berries. The berries and extract are used as ingredients in diuretic and laxative preparations. The oil is used as a fragrance component in soaps, detergents, creams, lotions and perfumes. Juniperberries are used for making gin. The berries are used as a carminative and diuretic, to treat flatulence, colic, intestinal worms and gastrointestinal infections. Juniperberries are recommended for acute and chronic cystitis and topical application for rheumatic pain in the joints or muscles. Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: The oil has an antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles. Juniperberries and juniper oil stimulate the excretion the glomerular filtration rate of the kidney. However, they are known to irritate the renal epithelium and could cause hematuria. It is believed that the toxicity depends on the hydrocarbon content of the essential oil. Juniperberry oil containing high levels of alpha and beta pinene which are known irritants to the urinary tract. Higher levels of pinenes would result from co-distillation of the needles, branches and unripe berries with ripe berries. It has been concluded that oil distilled from the ripe berries can be safely used in diuretic therapy. Indications: Detoxification: Juniperberry oil is well known for its diuretic and lymphatic decongestant properties.
