Denim fabric is made using a twill weave which provides strength and flexibility. Due to the structural shape of the horseshoe leg, using a more rigid denim will showcase the architectural curve of the design. If you prefer a more relaxed overall silhouette, choose a denim that has more drape. Midweight to heavyweight denim is most suitable for the Just My Luck Jeans, staying in the 9oz (305gsm) to 13.5oz (458gsm) range. You may also use a stretch denim with a very low amount of elastane, such as 1-2% if you would like that added comfort. Other suggestions for bottom weight fabrics that could work would be corduroy, canvas or twill. Lightweight woven fabrics are recommended for the pocket lining. Choose a fabric that you like the touch of against your skin! A more tightly woven fabric, like a cotton broadcloth or poplin, is perfect as a pocket lining. FIT RECOMMENDATIONS The Fit Description The Just My Luck Jeans are a modern horseshoe leg shape jeans pattern with a classic 5-pocket design at the top. The intended fit is for the waistband to hit just below your belly button/natural waist, and fit comfortably from the waistband through the high hip. It shouldn’t be “too tight”, and it shouldn’t be “too loose” from the waistband through the high hip area. From the high hip down to the hem, the jeans are roomy! *Yay for comfort!* The low hip area should be relaxed, the bum should be able to “breathe” and the bottom crotch point should fall comfortably below your body. These jeans are meant to fit relaxed through the rise, meaning the rise is on the longer side, but NOT meant to be brought up as high as it can go on your body. Let the crotch drop a little! It is all part of that “cool” aesthetic we are all going for when we wear a baggy jean. The star of the pattern is really at the knee. Each dart point on the front legs should rest just below your natural knee bend. This will ensure you keep the same proportions as the intended design. See recommended adjustments for your personal height & proportions below. The hem of the leg is supposed to hover above the ground in bare feet. Due to the nature of the leg shape, the hem is ~irregular~ and you may need to do some pattern adjustments as specified below to shorten or lengthen the inseam for your preferred leg length. Make sure to choose the inseam option closest to your desired finished inseam length! If you are between sizes, size down if you use 100% cotton denim. Adjusting For Height & Proportions The pattern is drafted for a 5’8” (172cm) tall person so you may wish the shorten or lengthen accordingly. Pattern pieces #1 Front and #2 Back have 3 separate shorten/lengthen lines at the rise, mid thigh, and mid shin. It is recommended to disperse the necessary height adjustment across the 3 separate lines to maintain the same proportion as the original design. The jeans have a lot of shaping along inseam and side seam of the #1 Front and #2 Back pieces that will start to distort if you only remove or add length to one line at the mid thigh or mid shin. To shorten or lengthen the inseam, use the shorten/lengthen line at the mid thigh and mid shin. It may be tempting to just remove or add length at the very hem of the legs, but it will change the proportions of the horseshoe leg shape. Use the mid thigh and mid shin shorten/lengthen line to raise or lower the dart location to align just below your natural knee bend. The shorten/lengthen line at the rise can be used to raise or lower the crotch point as well as move the waistband placement up or down. The rise is drafted for approximately 2.5” (6.3cm) of space between the bottom of your body and the bottom crotch point. This will vary depending on where exactly you choose to where your waistband on your body. You can refer to the finished garment measurements to compare your personal measurements and determine how much length is needed to remove or add. Compare the INSEAM to your personal measurement from the top of your inner thigh to the ground to determine how much length you would like to remove or add to the leg lengths. You can also compare the FRONT RISE and BACK RISE to your personal measurements, but it may be harder to understand how that measurement will feel in the final garment. SIZE GUIDE Find the size that corresponds closest to your personal measurements in the size chart below. Patterns are designed for a 5’8” (172cm) tall person. The following measurements are needed to determine your size: WAIST | The smallest part of your torso, directly underneath your rib cage and above your hip bones HIGH HIP | Starting 3” (7.6cm) below your waistline, around the circumference of your hips LOW HIP | The widest part of your hips, patterns drafted for 8” (20.3cm) below the waistline Choose your size based on your high hip measurement and make necessary pattern adjustments from there. The high hip is the most fitted area of the jeans. The waistband has some ease for added comfort while wearing and technically is not drafted to fit snuggly at your actual waist but resting below. If you fall across multiple sizes, you may find it beneficial to grade between sizes for the waist, high hip, and low hip area. If you would like to skip grading and jump into a single size, you can size down as long as you plan to use 100% cotton denim. Traditional 100% cotton denims will loosen as you wear & love your jeans because cotton doesn’t have a lot of natural recovery. Cotton can stretch, but can’t really be pulled back into shape. Compare your personal measurements to the finished garment measurements below to determine your desired amount of ease. See additional fit and pattern adjustments on pages 5-7 within the instruction booklet after download. There are 3 inseam options to choose from and each option is offered in a separate pattern file. Make sure to use the pattern file with your desired inseam length. Each inseam shortens the #1 Front and #2 Back leg pattern pieces by 1” (2.5cm) at the thigh AND by 1” (2.5cm) at the shin. The different inseam options do not affect any other pattern pieces. The rise lengths stay the same across all inseam options.
