Before Kandinsky, color was a servant. It described things — apples were red, skies were blue, shadows were gray. Then, around 1910 in Munich, Wassily Kandinsky began to argue that color didn't need an object at all. It could exist on its own terms. It could vibrate, hum, collide, recede. A yellow could be aggressive. A blue could be spiritual. A red next to a violet could create a tension that had nothing to do with representation and everything to do with feeling. He called painting "inner necessity."
