History of the Kansas State Flag In 1916, the Daughters of the American Revolution held a contest to select a flag design. Esther Northrup of Lawrence was chosen as the winner. The winning design consisted of three broad horizontal stripes, red, white, and blue. In the upper left was a gold sunflower on a blue background with the state seal as its center. This design ended up being denied by the legislature. As the debate continued into 1925, the legislature designed a flag to hang from a horizontal bar. It contained the earlier familiar elements, the sunflower and state seal centered in a blue field. Above this was "Kansas" and at the bottom was a draped gold fringe. Above the seal is the state crest; a sunflower (official state flower of Kansas) resting on a twisted blue and gold bar that represents the Louisiana Purchase (the original Louisiana Purchase territory is now divided among 13 states).
