The Lily of the Mohawks, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha chose Christ even when following Him meant leaving everything familiar behind. Born in 1656 in a Mohawk village in present-day New York, Kateri lost her parents and brother to a smallpox epidemic when she was still a child. The illness left her scarred and with weakened eyesight. Years later, she encountered Catholic missionaries and became deeply drawn to the Christian faith. She was baptized at age twenty and, despite ridicule and opposition, remained steadfast in her decision to follow Christ. Eventually she left her village for a Catholic Native community near Montreal, where she devoted the remainder of her short life to prayer, charity, and the Faith she had come to love. Saint Kateri’s story is a beautiful reminder of quiet courage. She did not become a saint because life was easy or because everyone around her understood her choices. She simply remained faithful to what she knew was true. Today she is especially beloved as the first Native American saint from present-day North America and as a patron of Native peoples, ecology, and the environment. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, pray for us. About the Shirt Printed on a super-soft Next Level Apparel tee designed for comfortable everyday wear.
