From Koine Greek, the dialect spoken across the Mediterranean for a thousand years until the 6th century AD, comes the word Kaustos: burned, scorched. As artist Tristan Dare continues his exploration of the lifecycle and journey of living organisms through their habitats, and the void that follows when they are gone, the Kaustos Meteorite Chef takes shape. Integral to the blade's damascus steel recipe, a beautifully organic pattern folded by Dare to approximately 1,000 layers, is both dust and solid fragments of the Muonionalusta meteorite, added alongside his high-carbon alloys of choice. Discovered in Scandinavia in 1906 near the Sweden-Finland border, the Muonionalusta is thought to have traveled through the solar system for over 4.56 billion years before impacting Earth approximately one million years ago. This makes it, like another ingredient in this work of art, older than Earth itself. At 228mm / 8.9" with 60mm of heel height, the blade sweeps backward beneath the fingers for maximum edge capacity and control, finished with symmetrical bevel geometry above a slim, hard, and razor-sharp edge. A rounded spine tapers the full length to a thin, pointed tip. Whether as a daily kitchen prep knife or a presentation piece reserved for the dining room, Dare delivers. Balance sits at the front of the handle, the knife settling into the hand with a natural, steady authority that is immediately felt. That feeling is due in no small part to a handle as artful as the blade. Forged by hand from solid steel, Dare carves crevices within and gilds them in pure 24k gold, the result inspired by ancient coral formations — something that once housed life, now preserved in metal and light.
