In herbal medicine, we often look to constitution and energetics as a lens to understand inherent health patterns of an individual; however, the unique genetics code, or genome, of an individual also intersects and plays a role in how each person responds differently to foods, herbs, stress, and environmental influences. In this class, Keren will discuss common genetic patterns and genetic mutations (or SNPs) and how to work with this lens to choose specific herbs and approaches to promote health, wellbeing, and resilience. This class will introduce foundational concepts in genomics that are most relevant to herbal practice, with an emphasis on tendencies rather than genetic determinism. We will explore how pathways related to metabolism, detoxification (including methylation and COMT), inflammation, and stress response may influence how individuals experience herbal support. Keren will explore what research shows about how certain herbs interact with these SNPs. Using this lens, we can begin to understand how genomic patterns may help inform herbal decision-making while remaining firmly rooted in whole-person assessment, ethical practice, and scope-appropriate care. Dr. Keren Dolan, DCN, CNS, LDN, RH (AHG), SEP, FACN, is a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) in Maryland and Illinois, a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS®), a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition (FACN), a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner(SEP®), a Registered Herbalist (RH) and past Chair of the American Herbalists Guild, and a Regional Director of the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy. She has published several peer-reviewed articles and has the privilege of serving as adjunct faculty in the Nutrition and Herbal Medicine Department at Notre Dame of Maryland University's School of Integrative Health (NDMU-SOIH) and Northeast College of Health Sciences' M.S. in Applied Clinical Nutrition. Keren has been in clinical practice in Northern Virginia since 2007, specializing in functional nutrition with an emphasis on western clinical herbalism and holistic aromatherapy. She lives, plants and plays in Northern Virginia with her husband and three children. Keren holds a Doctorate of Clinical Nutrition, an M.S. in Therapeutic Herbalism, and a Post-Master’s Certificate Clinical Herbalism from (NDMU-SOIH). She also earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Virginia.
