Two shapes decide whether a wolf face reads as frightening or friendly: the length of the muzzle and the size of the eyes. Draw the muzzle long and set the eyes small and narrow, and you have the creature from the old tales. Shorten the muzzle and open the eyes wide, as here, and the very same animal turns companionable. This mask is cut to the second recipe.Cut in two greysA darker grey outer shape forms the head, with two ears standing up and a row of tufts jutting out at each cheek. A lighter mottled grey panel sits over it for the face, running down to a rounded black nose at the point of the muzzle. The eye openings are large and round, which is most of the reason it looks welcoming rather than watchful. A flat black elastic band is fixed at each side.Becoming the wolfThe oldest form of the werewolf story is not a curse at all. It is a person putting a face on, stepping into another animal for a while, and stepping back out again when the evening ends. Children have always grasped that arrangement more quickly than the folklorists did.
