The idea for the original Quiet Your Mind and Busy Your Hands, a journal and adult affirmation coloring book, was born from my own mental health journey. I combined three practices that helped me deeply - journaling, positive affirmations, and adult coloring - into a tool that brought calm, creativity, and peace. After receiving incredible feedback and watching my own child (and many of yours!) ask to color alongside me, I knew we needed a version just for kids. As someone who incorporates affirmations and gratitude into my children’s daily routines, I’ve seen firsthand the impact it can have on their mindset and self-talk. I also know that many parents aren’t sure how to introduce these practices, and that’s where this book comes in. While creating this book, I had the privilege of partnering with Jennaca Cotton (@drjennacacotton), a Professor of Education, Literacy Specialist, and expert in social-emotional learning and trauma-informed care practices. With a doctorate in Educational Psychology from USC, Jennaca brings years of experience as an elementary school teacher, university professor, and curriculum designer. She has worked extensively with both students and educators to integrate literacy best practices and emotional development into learning environments. As a mother herself, Jennaca is passionate about bridging the gap between academic research and real-world application, ensuring the tools we’ve created in this book are not only engaging but also developmentally appropriate, research-backed, and grounded in educational psychology. Her insight has helped shape this book into a resource that supports both children and the adults guiding them.
