Said to have been discovered in the late 18th century in Philadelphia on a fruit farm owned by Peter Kieffer but now is planted widely across the eastern United States. The pear on ly requires 400 chill hours making it excellent for southern plantings. The tree, however, is hardy to zone 4. The fruit is yellow- green in color with a slight russeting. The fruit is stark white and crunchy but drippingly juicy. Tolerant of hot climates and pollution, this tree grows well in urban environment. In Spring, it produces white, fragrant blossoms. It is also resistant to fireblight.
