Who is the Program For? The Novice Program is perfect for students in PreK through grade 1, and for older learners who need help with reading and spelling simple, one-syllable word s. Lesson Content and Structure The lessons in the Novice Program (1-19) build the foundation for all future learning, making sure each step is clear and connected. These step-by-step lessons cover essential reading and spelling skills, including hearing and working with sounds in words (phonemic awareness), recognizing and writing letters, sounding out words (phonics and blending), spelling (encoding), reading smoothly (fluency), and learning important sight words. Lessons 1-19 offer supportive, step-by-step lessons that help students gain confidence and celebrate progress. Each lesson introduces one new sound and its spelling, such as a short vowel (a or i) or a consonant (m, t, h, p, n, c, d, s, b, r, f, or g). As students move through the program, the words and sentences they read and spell get a little more challenging each time. By Lesson 19, students can read and spell simple words like mat, had, and sit, as well as longer one-syllable words such as snag, caps, and band. They also learn important everyday, high-frequency words like has, are, here, and so. English sounds and spellings are taught in sequential order from the most common to the least common. The dynamic lessons systematically increase in complexity. Lessons include fun, easy-to-read stories and poems at different reading levels, so every student can experience success. These engaging texts spark students’ interest and help them remember what they’ve learned. Cumulative word lists at the end of each lesson provide additional practice opportunities for students ready for a challenge. Helpful tips for English learners are included throughout the program to support success at every step.
