A whetstone is an essential item to keep your knives sharp. Though it is sometimes mistaken as a reference to the water often used to lubricate such stones, the word "whetstone" is a compound word formed with the word "whet", which means to sharpen a blade. The process of using a sharpening stone is called stoning. For hundreds of years, the people of Japan have sharpened knives using natural stones lubricated with water. The geology of Japan has provided a type of stone which consists of fine silicate particles perfect for honing knife edges.
