That book 'Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses', first published in 1892, was for about two generations the most popular folk poetry in the English language; reprinted more than seventy times in Britain alone, it included 'The Window at Windsor', 'Danny Deever' and 'Gunga Din'. Favourite pieces were set to music, sung in the music halls, recited. In 1896 'The Seven Seas' appeared with further 'barrack-room ballads' and a third series about the soldiers of the Boer War appeared in the 'Five Nations'."
