This is a Hōnen-Ushi (Red Ox) folk toy carved in the Ittōbori (one-knife carving) style from Kishūyama in Saga Prefecture—an artisanal tradition that is now discontinued and no longer produced. Carved from a single piece of wood, its simple form is paired with hand-painted eyes and horns that give it a slightly humorous, endearing expression. The kind of charm that grows on you each time you see it. Traditionally, these ox figures were associated with farming and harvest, crafted with wishes for a bountiful year—true to their name, hōnen, meaning "abundant harvest."
