KNOCKED provides support for two preconditions necessary for an easy transition to sleep: slowed brain waves and balanced brain chemistry. Slowing Brain Waves The first step of sleep readiness is generating alpha brain waves, which indicate a state of calm relaxation. Alpha waves fall in the middle of the spectrum of the five kinds of electrical activity in the brain. They are not the principal waves during sleep, like theta or delta waves, and they are not the brain waves that predominate during times of intense focus or stress, like beta or gamma waves. They are the necessary bridge between the two. To transition from everyday activities to the early phases of sleep, the brain needs to pass into this intermediate phase of alertness. KNOCKED contains three ingredients that support the production of slowed brain waves and that help ease occasional stress. https://www.coursehero.com/study-guides/intropsychmaster/stages-of-sleep/ L-Theanine is the amino acid that makes tea so relaxing.* It has been shown to increase alpha waves in the brain, as measured by EEG, in a placebo-controlled study, at a dosage of 200 mg.* The relaxing effect was notable as early as 45 minutes after taking the supplement. https://apjcn.nhri.org.tw/server/APJCN/17%20Suppl%201//167.pdf Valerian, a traditional sleep herb, is provided for extra support. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7585905/pdf/10.1177_2515690X20967323.pdf https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12325-023-02708-6 GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is an amino acid found in fermented foods that serves as an inhibitory neurotransmitter.* As such, it reduces excitability in the neurons of the central nervous system.* At relatively low doses (28-50 mg), GABA has been shown to reduce occasional stress, in one study taking effect in as little as 30 minutes.* Studies using a higher dose (100 mg) found GABA effectively increases alpha brain waves while decreasing beta brain waves.* https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16971751/ https://www.researchgate.net/publication/6818809_Relaxation_and_immunity_enhancement_effects_of_g-Aminobutyric_acid_GABA_administration_in_humans https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6049207/pdf/10068_2016_Article_76.pdf Balanced Brain Chemistry Once the brain is calm, the complicated mix of hormones and neurotransmitters that support sleep can go to work. KNOCKED provides four ingredients to help balance brain chemistry.* Melatonin is a hormone that sets the body’s internal clock and readies the body for sleep.* It has been shown to help relieve occasional sleeplessness in three ways.* First, melatonin reduces sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), both initially and after nighttime wakening. Second, it increases sleep efficiency (the time in bed spent asleep rather than tossing and turning). And third, it improves the sensation of being well rested upon waking in the morning.* Melatonin: A sleep promoting hormone https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4069047/ https://journals.lww.com/intclinpsychopharm/abstract/2009/09000/the_effect_of_prolonged_release_melatonin_on_sleep.2.aspx 5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, is a serotonin precursor that has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier when taken as a supplement and to increase serotonin production.* It is used to promote healthy sleep.* https://altmedrev.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/v3-4-271.pdf https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0261561424000104 Vitamin B6 helps the body synthesize both GABA and melatonin, making it an important nutrient for promoting a calm mood and readiness for sleep. Additionally, this vitamin helps the body produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate sleep.* Observational studies have shown links between vitamin B6 status, serotonin production, and healthy sleep. Vitamin B6 is water-soluble, which means the body cannot store it and therefore requires a daily supply. Stress, smoking, and alcohol consumption can affect how well it is absorbed. Seniors are at particular risk of vitamin B6 deficiency. Chamomile, a traditional calming herb, is provided for extra support.* https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0965229924000591 Other Ingredients: Purified water, natural orange flavor, sunflower lecithin, stevia leaf extract (steviol glycosides), glycerin (from palm kernel), xanthan gum, acacia gum, potassium sorbate.
