Marcel Wanders designed the Knotted Chair in 1996 as part of the Droog Design collective, and it has since become one of the most culturally resonant objects in late-twentieth-cent ury furniture history. Its silhouette borrows from macramé and domestic handcraft traditions. Its construction is something else entirely. Each chair is made from aramid braided cord with a carbon fiber core. Every knot is tied by hand, then saturated with epoxy resin. The piece is suspended and left to cure, with gravity, not a mold, determining the final form. The result is a rigid, self-supporting structure that holds the visible memory of its own making.
