James Davidson of Carve It These handmade taonga pūoro (instruments) are lovingly designed and created by James Davidson, a Māori carver based here in the Bay of Plenty. Kōauau are traditional Māori flutes that were commonly made from wood or bone. These kōauau have three wenewene (finger holes), with both ends open. Using slight movements of the tongue and lips, sounds can be produced. Kōauau were/are used in a variety of ways including for entertainment, as well as in times of healing and grieving.
