Takaoka Metalwork Incense Burner This round, flat-style incense burner (hira-maru koro) is a piece of Takaoka copperware, the centuries-old metal-casting tradition of Takaoka, Toyama. A traditional craftsman hand-engraves the motif directly into the copper body, then finishes the engraving in gold, silver, or plating to bring the design out in relief. The "peony" version is engraved with a butterfly dancing over blooming peonies, while the "Hazuru" version is engraved with a classical motif of waves and cranes, a Japanese design long associated with longevity and good fortune.
