There is something wonderfully calming about a kokedama. Inspired by a centuries old Japanese planting technique, these beautiful moss style hanging planters celebrate simplicity, craftsmanship, and the natural beauty of the plant itself. Suspended from natural jute twine, this String of Hearts Kokedama feels more like a piece of living art than a traditional hanging houseplant. The cascading trails of String of Hearts tumble gently over the hand wrapped coconut fibre ball, creating a soft contrast between delicate heart shaped leaves and the rich natural texture beneath. Each leaf is uniquely marbled with silver, green, and soft purple tones, making every plant slightly different from the next. We have always loved String of Hearts because it never feels overdone. It grows slowly, gracefully, and rewards patience, with longer trails becoming increasingly beautiful over time. Combined with the natural simplicity of a kokedama, it creates a display that feels relaxed, organic, and quietly elegant. Whether hung in a bright kitchen, beside a window, or displayed in a reading corner, this is one of those plants that softens a room without ever demanding attention. It is also a wonderful gift for plant lovers looking for something a little different from a traditional potted houseplant. Size Kokedama ball approximately 12cm Natural jute hanging cords included Each plant is naturally unique, with variation in trail length, foliage density, and overall growth habit Native habitat and growth pattern String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii) is native to South Africa, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe, where it grows amongst rocks and through surrounding vegetation in warm, dry conditions. The delicate trailing stems emerge from small underground tubers that store moisture, allowing the plant to cope with periods of drought. As the vines grow longer, they naturally drape downwards, producing pairs of beautifully marbled heart shaped leaves along each stem. The kokedama planting style complements this natural habit perfectly. Rather than hiding the plant inside a traditional pot, the roots are wrapped within a hand formed coconut fibre ball, allowing the trailing stems to become the centre of attention. Given bright conditions and a little patience, the vines continue extending throughout the growing season, creating an increasingly elegant hanging display. Styling at home A kokedama brings something very different to an indoor plant collection. Without a ceramic pot, the focus shifts entirely onto the natural materials and the beauty of the plant itself. The warm coconut fibre, natural jute twine, and delicate trailing foliage work beautifully within Scandinavian, Japandi, bohemian, and contemporary interiors. Hang it individually for a calming focal point, or display several kokedamas together at different heights to create a living indoor garden with real depth and movement. We particularly love these in kitchens, bedrooms, home offices, and reading corners where the gentle cascading foliage can be appreciated up close. Care requirements Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning or evening sun is beneficial. Water: When the kokedama begins to feel light, immerse the entire ball in water for around 10 to 15 minutes. Allow excess water to drain thoroughly before rehanging. Humidity: Average household humidity is perfectly suitable. Temperature: Prefers warm indoor temperatures and should be protected from cold draughts. Feeding: Feed occasionally during spring and summer using a diluted liquid fertiliser. We recommend our Organic Tropical Plant Food to encourage healthy foliage and longer trailing growth. Why choose this plant The combination of a String of Hearts and a kokedama creates something genuinely special. It is not simply a hanging plant, but a natural display that blends traditional Japanese inspiration with one of our favourite trailing houseplants. As the vines become longer, the display becomes increasingly graceful, while the natural coconut fibre ball develops even more character over time. It is an ideal choice for anyone looking for a thoughtful gift, a unique talking point, or simply a different way to display houseplants without the need for a traditional pot. Beautiful, calming, and effortlessly stylish, it is one of those plants that quietly transforms a room.
