To achieve its lethal edge and resilient spine, the blade undergoes a meticulous clay-tempering process. By coating the spine of the blade with a thick, specialized clay mixture and leaving the edge exposed before quenching it in water, the edge cools far more rapidly than the spine. This differential hardening technique is what gives the Kyōjin its breathtaking, undulating hamon (temper line), which dances brilliantly across the polished steel, as well as a robust spine capable of absorbing intense shock without breaking.
