Kuentz Bas Riesling is a bone-dry, Demeter-certified biodynamic Riesling from Alsace, France, bottled at 13.5% ABV in a standard 750ml format. Produced by one of Alsace's oldest houses — founded in 1795 — this wine stands out as a benchmark for what conscientious, terroir-driven Alsatian Riesling can deliver, combining intense minerality with pristine fruit clarity.Quick Facts: ABV: 13.5% | Origin: Alsace, France | Varietal: 100% Riesling | Producer: Kuentz-Bas (est. 1795) | Certification: Demeter BiodynamicProduction & HeritageKuentz-Bas traces its roots to 1795 in Alsace, making it one of the region's most established wine houses. When Jean-Baptiste Adam took over operations in 2004, he immediately implemented biodynamic viticulture across the estate's 10 hectares of certified vineyards — a bold pivot that earned full Demeter certification. The Riesling is vinified either in century-old oak casks, which allow slow micro-oxidation and textural complexity, or in stainless steel tanks that preserve bright primary fruit aromas. This dual-vessel approach gives the winemaking team flexibility to express different facets of their Riesling parcels in each vintage.Tasting NotesAroma: The nose opens with fresh green apple and fennel fronds, building toward floral notes of acacia and honeysuckle. Underneath, hints of wet slate and a whisper of white pepper signal the mineral backbone to come.Taste: The entry is light and juicy, immediately showcasing both green and yellow apple alongside savory fennel. Mid-palate, honeysuckle and a delicate thread of apricot emerge, all woven together by a driving, refreshing acidity. Despite the fruity character, the wine remains firmly bone-dry, with wet-stone minerality anchoring every sip.Finish: The finish is long and vibrant, carrying flavors of slate, a faint hint of smoke, and lingering peppery earthiness. Crisp acidity keeps the palate clean and leaves a persistent floral impression. How to Drink Kuentz-Bas RieslingThis Riesling is best served chilled to around 46–50°F, poured into a tulip-shaped white wine glass to concentrate its aromatic complexity. It drinks beautifully on its own as an aperitif or alongside food. For cocktail-adjacent serves, try it in a Riesling Spritz with a splash of sparkling water and a lemon twist, where the wine's natural acidity keeps the drink brisk and refreshing. It also works well in a classic Kir with a small measure of crème de cassis, as the dry minerality balances the sweetness of the liqueur. A Hugo Spritz variation — substituting this Riesling for prosecco with elderflower syrup and fresh mint — plays off the wine's inherent floral and herbal notes.Best For Exploring biodynamic and terroir-driven Alsatian wines Pairing with an elaborate seafood dinner or charcuterie spread Gifting a wine enthusiast who values heritage producers Building an Alsace vertical tasting alongside Grand Cru expressions Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Kuentz-Bas Riesling taste like? It is a bone-dry Riesling dominated by green apple, fennel, and wet-slate minerality, balanced by vibrant acidity and a long finish with hints of smoke and white pepper. How does Kuentz-Bas Riesling compare to Trimbach Riesling? Both are benchmark dry Alsace Rieslings from historic merchant houses, but Kuentz-Bas distinguishes itself through full Demeter-certified biodynamic farming and the option of century-old oak cask fermentation, which can add textural richness. Trimbach tends toward a more austere, steely mineral profile with an emphasis on precision and consistency. Is Kuentz-Bas Riesling good for sipping on its own? Grilled or pan-seared white fish like halibut or Dover sole complements the mineral and citrus character. Kuentz-Bas has been making wine since 1795, yet its full commitment to biodynamic farming — certified by Demeter — places it among the most forward-thinking estates in the region. The dual vinification in either century-old oak or stainless steel gives the winemaker unusual latitude to shape each vintage. The result is a Riesling that delivers the intense mineral clarity Alsace is known for, grounded by the kind of textural depth and aromatic purity that biodynamic advocates argue only conscientious farming can achieve.
