L-ergothioneine is an amino acid that’s widely distributed throughout the body. It cannot be produced by the body, so it must be obtained through the diet. L-ergothioneine is found (in small quantities) in a variety of food sources, but the highest concentrations are in certain types of mushrooms. This food-derived amino acid is thought to support long-term health through free radical scavenging. In addition, the body has a highly specific mechanism to transport L-ergothioneine into your cells. Only a few types of mushrooms supply significant quantities of L-ergothioneine and one of the best sources is the golden oyster mushroom. Matakana Health is one of the first companies to provide a naturally occurring (non-synthetic), version of an L-ergothioneine supplement. By using dual-extraction technology on the fruiting body of the golden oyster mushroom, 1% natural L-ergothioneine and immune supporting beta- glucans (at 30%) are obtained. L-ergothioneine levels can decrease as we age and supplementing with L-ergothioneine is one of the latest strategies to support healthy ageing. Health Benefits Supports Telomere Health Telomeres are protective caps at the end of our chromosomes however, as we age, telomeres naturally shorten. L-ergothioneine supports telomere length and health. Supports Heart, Brain, Eye Health Studies have shown that diets high in L-ergothioneine can support heart, brain and eye health. Beta Glucans β-glucans found in golden oyster mushrooms also support heart & immune health, healthy glucose and lipid levels, as well as healthy blood pressure.
