The L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco is a small, colorful pleco species known for its striking orange and black tiger-like striping. Native to the Amazon region near Alenquer in Brazil, it is popular among aquarists because it stays relatively small compared to common plecos and has a peaceful temperament. Adult fish usually reach about 4–5 inches (10–12 cm), making them suitable for medium aquariums rather than the very large tanks required for many plecos. This species is a wood-eating pleco (xylivore) that grazes on biofilm and algae growing on driftwood. Because of this, aquariums should always include driftwood along with caves or hiding places where the fish can rest during the day.
