Either pod can be rotated away from the eye, allowing the system to be operated binocularly or with a single optical channel when required. This can be particularly useful when integrating night vision with a handheld thermal device or when the user needs one unaided eye. The articulating design also allows the pods to be rotated against the helmet when stowed. This creates a lower-profile configuration than leaving both pods extended while the entire system is flipped upward on the helmet mount. Manual Gain Control The BNVD-1531 provides manual gain adjustment, allowing the user to control image brightness based on the environment and operating conditions. This provides additional control when moving between changing ambient-light conditions or when a lower image brightness is preferred. Adjustable Diopters & PVS-14-Pattern Optics One of the key differences between the BNVD-1531 and the PVS-31A is the BNVD-1531's use of adjustable diopters and PVS-14-pattern optics. The adjustable eyepieces allow the system to be focused to the individual user's eyes, while the PVS-14-pattern optical architecture provides a familiar and widely supported optical format. Integrated Infrared Illuminator Unlike the PVS-31A, the BNVD-1531 incorporates an integrated infrared illuminator. The onboard IR illuminator provides supplemental infrared illumination for close-range tasks and environments where additional IR light is required. Dual Power Capability The BNVD-1531 can operate from an onboard AA battery or from the included external PVS-31-style battery pack. External power allows battery weight to be moved toward the rear of the helmet and can assist with overall helmet balance while powering the binocular system. The external battery pack also incorporates an IR strobe for signaling and identification. The strobe is controlled by a switch located on the battery pack. Image Intensifier Options The BNVD-1531 is available with two cosmetic-selection options. Both use 2376 minimum FOM L3Harris unfilmed white phosphor image intensifiers. The primary difference is the acceptable cosmetic spot standard. 2376 Minimum FOM — Mil-Spec Spot Specification FOM: 2376 minimum Maximum of four spots per image intensifier larger than .003 in No spots larger than .003 in permitted in Zone 1 Spots measuring .003 in or smaller are acceptable 2376 Minimum FOM — Aviation Spot Specification FOM: 2376 minimum Maximum of three spots per image intensifier larger than .003 in, limited to Zone 3 No spots larger than .003 in permitted in Zone 1 or Zone 2 Spots measuring .003 in or smaller are acceptable The Aviation Spot Specification option is intended for customers who want a stricter cosmetic standard while retaining the same 2376 minimum FOM performance requirement. Small cosmetic spots are a normal characteristic of image intensifier manufacturing. Selecting the Aviation Spot Specification applies a stricter standard to larger visible spots but does not guarantee a completely spot-free image. Please note: Aviation Spot Specification systems require additional hand selection and may have substantially longer lead times. Availability varies, and a definitive lead time cannot always be provided. Historically, this selection may require approximately 30–60 additional days compared with the standard configuration. BNVD-1531 vs. PVS-31A The BNVD-1531 and PVS-31A share the lightweight, professional binocular concept, but the BNVD-1531 incorporates several important differences. Adjustable Diopters: The BNVD-1531 provides adjustable diopter focus through its PVS-14-pattern optical system. Integrated IR Illuminator: The BNVD-1531 includes an onboard infrared illuminator.
