Substantial at 161ct and 55.2x45mm, this broad oval cabochon is close to round in outline and gently domed. The flash covers most of the face in strong royal blue, breaking into pa le ice-blue and near-white through the lower center where it is most intense, and into deeper cobalt patches across the top. Around those bright areas the grey body shows through in dark islands, some flecked with small turquoise points, and a coppery-bronze zone runs along the lower left rim. Fine crossing lines mark the internal structure throughout. The patchwork look comes from the rough having several differently oriented internal domains within one piece. Each domain returns color at its own angle, so instead of one even sheet the flash arrives in blocks, brightening and dimming independently as the stone is turned. India produces this large-format blue material in quantity. Untreated, with the phenomenon owed to structure alone. Hardness is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale; a cabochon of this size makes a strong pendant center or an attractive display stone.
