Artist: Morgan Overton Size: 16x20" print Medium: (Print) Watercolor, Graphite, Gold Leaf, Embroidery Burned-edged maps of Colonial America are collaged into the background as twoancestral figures delicately weave gold thread as an act of protection, remembrance, and preservation of sacred land. The maps hold imposed borders, while the figures respond with restorative justice. Magnolias, inspired by the visual language of chinoiserie, adorn their bodies as a counterpoint to the colonial cartography. Through an Afrofuturist lens, weaving becomes a reparative gesture to reimagining of how land might be restored to its rightful stewardship. When I envision the future, I do not see corporate skyscrapers or flying cars, but aworld where nature exists in harmony with us, and where humanity replacesdomination.
