Smaller seeds — basil, radish, broccoli — should be sown fairly densely across the full mat. Larger seeds such as sunflower and pea benefit from a little more spacing. As a guide, cover most of the mat with minimal gaps, but don't stack seeds more than one layer deep. In Queensland's subtropical climate, summer humidity can run high. Good airflow around the tray reduces the risk of mould on the seed surface — especially in the first few days before the seedlings emerge — so avoid an enclosed, unventilated spot.
