It is a semi precious stone which was highly prized by many ancient cultures including the Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians,Egyptians, Harrapans, Greeks and Romans. It has been found fashioned into amulets, beads, knife handles, statues and inlaid in bowls which are thousands of years old. Catherine the Great used Lapis Lazuli to decorate the St Petersberg palace with 2 metre tall urns carved from solid Lapis. Geological Description Lapis Lazuli is a sodium aluminium silicate with sulphur, chlorine and hydroxyl, and variable inclusions of pyrite and white calcite. It has a hardness of 5 to 6. Lapis mostly comes from the West Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, with other deposits found in Chile and Russia.
