[fr] CHILI (JUIN 2024) Bordant la côte ouest de l’Amérique du Sud, face à l’océan Pacifique, la République du Chili s’étend sur plus de 4 300 kilomètres, depuis l’aride désert d’Atacama au nord, jusqu’au point le plus austral du continent, le cap Horn, pour une largeur moyenne de 180 kilomètres. Ces longilignes frontières font du voisin du Pérou, de la Bolivie et de l’Argentine une exception, qui ne se résume pas au « laboratoire néolibéral » auquel on le réduit trop souvent. Cinq ans après l’estallido social de 2019, qui avait ouvert la voie à la révision d’une Constitution datant de l’ère Pinochet, les espoirs sont douchés puisque c’est le statu quo qui l’a finalement emporté par deux fois, les référendums de 2022 et 2023 ayant tous les deux abouti au rejet des nouveaux textes, version progressiste (2022) et conservatrice (2023). Pour guérir « la gueule de bois » des lendemains qui déchantent, les architectes chilien·nes en sont convaincu·es : l’architecture est un moyen de rendre l’avenir à nouveau « désirable ». These long borders make this neighbour of Peru, Bolivia and Argentina an exception, and not the 'neoliberal laboratory' to which it is too often reduced. Five years after the estallido social of 2019, which paved the way for the revision of the Constitution dating from the Pinochet era, hopes were dashed as the status quo finally prevailed twice, with the referendums of 2022 and 2023 both resulting in the rejection of new Constitutions, a progressive version (2022) and a conservative version (2023). Chilean architects are convinced that architecture is a way of making the future 'desirable' once again.
