Bay Laurel Tree - Laurus nobilisBay trained as a standard - a clear stem with a clipped head - is one of the most satisfying plants you can have on a patio. It looks considered, it holds its shape, and it's genuinely functional. The leaves go straight from the garden into the kitchen, and fresh bay beats dried from the supermarket every time. Native to the Mediterranean, Laurus nobilis has been cultivated for centuries. Hardy to around -5 to -10°C, fully evergreen, and happy in most soils as long as drainage is reasonable. The standard form suits containers particularly well - a pair flanking a front door is a classic for good reason. This plant is also known as Sweet Bay and True Laurel. Grow in sun or partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. Prune once or twice a year - late spring is ideal - to maintain the shape you want. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser.
