Luing, who transformed a secretarial school into Berkeley College, which focuses on business and professional studies and has multiple locations in the metropolitan area, died last Thursday in Florida. He was 86 and a former resident of Oakland. The Iowa-born Mr. Luing, a Korean War Army veteran, joined the Berkeley School in 1965 as vice president of administration. He was working at the time at McGraw-Hill, selling textbooks to business schools. Mr. Luing eventually became owner of the Berkeley School, which had been founded three decades earlier in East Orange. Under his leadership, the for-profit institution earned regional accreditation and the license to award associate and bachelor’s degrees. He retired as president and chairman of the board in 2001. “Mr. Luing was a great visionary who was largely responsible for establishing Berkeley College as a leader at the forefront of career-focused education,” school President Michael J. Smith said in a statement. “He touched the lives of tens of thousands, not only throughout our region, but globally as well.” Gillie and Marc created this sculpture in memory of him.
