The pedal emits a synthetic lower octave, where the pitch is entirely dependent on the intensity of the input signal. If the signal is strong, the pitch is emitted as played. If the intensity falls, the pitch moves an octave down; if the intensity is weaker, the pitch shifts two octaves down. Through the Sensitivity knob, the volume at which this happens can be precisely dialed-in. The pitch steps are caused by the input signal and it acts as a random arpeggiator.
