This short biography of the martyred bishop and reformer, Hugh Latimer (1487–1555), was one of Ryle’s first historical works. In this work he examines the ministry of Bishop Latime r under three headings: 1) Latimer’s times; 2) Latimer’s life; 3) Latimer’s opinions. These are the aspects of Latimer’s history that Ryle found most instructive. When Ryle first delivered this lecture, a group of churchmen were actively seeking to un-Protestantize the Church of England and bring it closer to the Church of Rome in both worship and doctrine.
