This is the Laurids Lønborg company of Denmark's iconic mid century kinetic ball sculpture design, referred to as Celestial Bouquet. Is this a sculpture or a toy? We think both. Who can resist picking it up and gently shaking it so that the plastic balls flop around and make funny noises. Unfortunately, many owners (or their children) played with them a bit too much over the years, which is why it is difficult to find examples that have all of their delicate metal fronds and balls intact. The company had a number of talented designers working for them including the Danes Dorthe Bruun Rasmussen and Gunnar Flørning (responsbile for most of the company’s designs) as well as the Swedish design couple Al & Lena Eklund. The products were typically sold in larger department stores in Scandinavia and were also exported. At the time they were fairly priced items that offered buyers quality Danish design at accessible prices. Laurids Lønborg continue to be highly collected -- and copied -- today.
