Gas bubbles trapped as the lava cooled leave the pitted, vesicular texture, which is exactly why it holds essential oils. Its natural colours run black, red, grey, brown and metallic silver; lava beads are often dyed black, and take the colour well while staying porous. Care Porous — it absorbs whatever it is put in, which is the feature. Put a drop of essential oil on the bead and let it soak in; never put undiluted oil on the skin under it. Do not soak lava in water; wipe it clean and air-dry. Cleanse it with moonlight or a smudge.
