Le Piane’s Boca has become recognised not only as one of great wines of the Alto Piemonte, but as one of the great Nebbiolo based wines of Italy. In doing so, it has become a beacon of quality in Boca, lifting the region from obsolescence and establishing it as a pre-eminent region for growing Nebbiolo. 95+/100 - Concerned about the cool conditions of the growing season (which saw a lot of rain throughout the spring and summer months), Christoph Künzli worried that he would be forced to skip over this vintage. Thankfully, the 2013 Boca was made, and it most certainly delivers the goods. The latter part of the growing season—and the most critical—saw sunshine and heat, leading to a late harvest with fruit ripening on the vines until October 23rd. This blend of Nebbiolo and Vespolina shows beautiful balance and delineation, with bright fruit and crisp freshness that will serve the wine well as it ages forward in time. This vintage also delivers a sound sense of inner power that pushes it elegantly over the palate. - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate 95/100 - The 2013 Boca is powerful, dense and explosive - almost shockingly so. A wine of extraordinary purity and depth, the 2013 possesses stunning richness and notes of dark wild cherry, plum, mint and wild flowers, all wrapped inside a ball of huge tannins. The 2013 is a total knockout, but it won't be released until next year and won't be at its best for another few years beyond that or longer. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
